Simon Dunne
Director of Structural Engineering
Simon Dunne is an accomplished Director of Structural Engineering at Pivotal International, a Fellow of Engineers Ireland, and a Chartered Structural Engineer with over two decades of experience delivering innovative, efficient and sustainable structural solutions across a broad spectrum of sectors. His technical expertise and leadership acumen have positioned him as a trusted authority in civil and structural design, project management, and regulatory compliance, with a career built on quality, collaboration and forward-thinking engineering.
A member of both Engineers Ireland and the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), Simon is an active contributor to the advancement of the structural engineering profession. He recently completed his term as Chair of the IStructE Republic of Ireland Regional Group (2023–2024) and currently serves on the IStructE Design Practice Risk and Structural Safety Committee, where he helps shape best practices and promote safety-focused design across the industry. His previous role as Secretary of the Regional Group further reflects his long-standing commitment to professional development and thought leadership.
Simon joined Garland prior to his current leadership at Pivotal International and served as Project Director on a diverse portfolio of large-scale developments. His projects have spanned residential, industrial, commercial, infrastructure, healthcare, education and public sector works, including high-profile conservation and restoration projects. He is highly experienced in leading multi-disciplinary teams from concept through to completion, often in the context of technically complex and high-value environments.
His expertise also includes delivering key statutory roles such as Project Supervisor Design Process (PSDP) and Assigned Certifier coordination, where his thorough understanding of Irish building regulations and certification procedures ensures compliance and seamless project execution. Simon’s clear communication and detail-oriented leadership foster integrated solutions that align structural performance with client objectives, budget constraints, and sustainability targets.
A champion of sustainable engineering practices, Simon embeds environmental responsibility into his design philosophy – pushing for structural solutions that minimise embodied carbon, reduce material waste, and optimise lifecycle value. His leadership reflects a deep commitment to building resilient infrastructure and creating long-term value for communities and clients alike.
Simon also brings particular strength in Building Information Modelling (BIM) and digital construction. He has delivered multiple projects to BIM Level 2 and holds certifications as both a Project Information Manager (PIM) and Task Information Manager (TIM). His leadership in this space was demonstrated through his presentation to the Construction IT Alliance (CitA) on the implementation of BIM Level 2 at the National Children’s Hospital – a nationally significant and technologically advanced healthcare project. His insights into BIM adoption, digital workflows, and information management have helped project teams improve collaboration, accuracy and performance throughout the building lifecycle.
At Pivotal International, Simon leads the structural engineering function with an emphasis on technical excellence, innovation, digital integration and sustainability. He continues to guide project delivery across a wide range of sectors, ensuring structural integrity, efficiency and adaptability in all designs. His influence extends beyond the project level contributing to the industry’s evolution while mentoring the next generation of engineers.
